03A1 Developing descriptors for the Qualifications Framework for Architectural Education in MEDES Countries

A working group (WG) was defined by the project to develop the expected intellectual outcome. This work elaborated an approach to the formulation of the framework describing, in detail, the qualifications offered in architectural education in Southern Europe. This work did not introduce any kind of separation or differentiation of the EQF and its specification made by Tuning project in the form of creative disciplines and Architecture. On the contrary, it elaborated further the proposed Descriptors in order to incorporate the local particularities as they have  emerged by  intellectual outcomes O1 and O2. The outcome of this WG was an extremely useful tool for the development of new school curricula, the advancement of the debate on architectural education in the area and the broadening of architectural thinking and creating.

The group worked on three stages:

As a first step it elaborated  EQF Level 7 detailed Descriptors for Architecture as the accomplishment of this level was the condition to have access to  professional practice. For the formulation of this level the contribution of the professional bodies was extremely important, which explains why at this stage the working group was supported by representatives of all partners of the project. In order to assure a competent spectrum of necessary knowledge, skills and competences the  WG made a systematic comparison of the descriptors of level 7 with the points, which the NAAB (National Architectural Accreditation Board) of the USA defined as structural characteristics of the profile of the architect. In parallel the group took into account the similar characteristics that appeared in the official description of the profile of the architect made by the International Union of Architects (UIA), which is the international body of  professional architects.

As a second step, the group elaborated the Descriptors for Levels 6 (Bachelor) and 8 (Doctorate). This was done primarily by the schools participating in the project.

As a third step, the group presented its outcomes for consultation in the local and broader context (other schools, professional bodies, competent authorities) in order to have feedback and prepare the final text that was presented on the web site of the project in downloadable form.
